Gypsy Girls: Mary and Priscilla Loveridge, Royal Admiral 1792
Gypsy Girls: Mary and Priscilla Loveridge is the story of some and historical insight from the early colony of NSW, being Mary and Priscilla Loveridge, two gypsy girls who found themselves on the shores on Sydney Cove in Oct 1792 each with a new born baby in their arms along with seaman Thomas Dargin, all from the ship Royal Admiral.
Loveridge is well known Romany Gypsy surname. There are a few ties to Norfolk Island (of course) with marriages of the first generation of both Mary and Priscilla Loveridge. And let’s not forget about the Sydney Orphan School, the Pubs and those few white lies from the past family writings.
Some of the research from both old and new, lead me on a tangent or two with the complex array of primary records. It is fortunate that this project was undertaken at a time of increased technology and digitisation of records as many of these were not easily accessible previously. There is also a range of non-digitised NSW Colonial records which I have also personally acquired over the years too which help addressed the difficulties of the research encountered in the past and have added historical data previous not known about the two Loveridge Gypsy Girls. It is from these that I have been able to really solve the mystery and mix-up of both Mary and Priscilla Loveridge’s children of the past.
A great deal of new material has been discovered during the archival investigations into the research for this publication along with corrections and updating historical facts on the both Loveridge Girls and Thomas Dargin of the Royal Admiral 1792. Gypsy Girls: Mary and Priscilla Loveridge, Royal Admiral 1792 will be a limited print run and orders posted out in early Dec 2024. Cost is $23.00 including postage.
